Is SMS Right For You?

Untitled design (6)-1If you haven’t heard, SMS marketing is the next big thing, and now is the time to capitalize on the momentum. Just a few months ago Klaviyo released its SMS tool and so far we have seen proven results with our eCommerce clients, and it’s only heating up.

If you still need a little more convincing, just check out a few of these stats:

  • 90% of all texts are read in the first 3 minutes
  • 85% of customers prefer to communicate directly with their favorite brands via text
  • 70% of consumers think SMS marketing is a great way for businesses to get their attention
  • 54% of consumers would like to receive promotions via text message, but only 11% of businesses send them this way

Just like Klaviyo’s email platform, their SMS tool is incredibly user-friendly. The best part is you can integrate text messages right into your existing email flows, giving you the option to connect with your customers using different touchpoints. Plus, with segmenting capabilities built-in, you’re able to get really granular with your data to speak to each individual customer at the right time in the right way.

How To Get Started

If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend trying SMS in your Welcome Series or Cart Abandonment flows first. Try an A/B split offering discounts to two different, equal-sized groups using email and SMS to see which garners the most revenue and engagement.

Klaviyo also offers great how-to resources in their resources library for more in-depth strategies!

We’ve had a lot of fun testing SMS marketing in tandem with our email strategies so far, and have been amazed by the results. Take a look at a few of our case studies.

Case Study 1: Opting into SMS and Welcome Series

To begin utilizing SMS, you first need your customers to opt-in. In order to drive sign-ups, we added SMS opt-in banners to all of our automated emails, published pop-ups to the site, and targeted both new and existing contacts with an SMS opt-in email campaign. Once we had a decent-sized database opted into text messages, we were able to add SMS touchpoints to our Welcome Series flow.

Our Results:

  • Existing Contact SMS Opt-In Conversion Rate: 6.5%
  • Email AND SMS capture Pop-Up Conversion Rate: 4%
  • SMS Opt-In Landing Page Conversion Rate: 46.7%
  • Total Revenue Attributed to Klaviyo: $114,239
  • Adding an SMS Opt-In and a Welcome SMS to the Welcome Series increased revenue by 20%

Case Study 2: Integrating SMS in Automations

We wanted to test integrating SMS into our existing email strategy for a health and wellness client. To achieve this, we added SMS touchpoints through the entire sales funnel – from Browse Abandonment to Shipping Confirmation – to provide ease of shopping.

Our Results:

  • SMS generated over $7,000 in revenue within the first 60 days of implementation

Case Study 3: SMS Campaigns

SMS campaigns are a great way to segment your database and offer special messaging to specific groups. We built out SMS campaigns for flash sales for an entertainment client since text messages are read almost immediately to create urgency for the customer to make a purchase.

Our Results:

  • Campaign Revenue Generated: Over $13,000 within a few hours
  • Total Revenue: Over $400,000 in a few months

As digital marketers, we’re always looking for ways to provide value for our clients. We’ve seen great results through SMS marketing so far in various industries and we’re excited to continue utilizing this technology as an omnichannel strategy with email marketing in order to increase ROI and drive revenue and engagement.
